สภาพแวดล้อมทางธรรมชาติ
พื้นที่ป่ามีประมาณร้อยละ 30 และนับว่ามีขนาดใหญ่เป็นอันดับ 3 ของรองจากสวีเดนและฟินแลนด์ ตั้งแต่ปี 1945 พื้นที่ป่าเพิ่มขึ้นร้อยละ 46 และถ้าพูดถึงในช่วง 200 ปีที่ผ่านมา นับว่าเพิ่มขึ้นถึงเท่าตัว
ฝรั่งเศสมีความแตกต่างไปจากประเทศอื่นๆในยุโรปเพราะมีพันธุ์ไม้มากถึง 136 ชนิด ในส่วนของสัตว์ใหญ่ก็เพิ่มจำนวนขึ้น ภายในช่วงระยะเวลา 20 ปี จำนวนของสัตว์ประเภทกวางเพิ่มขึ้นถึง 2-3 เท่า
ประเทศฝรั่งเศสให้ความสำคัญกับมรดกทางธรรมชาติและการอนุรักษ์สิ่งแวดล้อมทางธรรมชาติ จึงได้มีการจัดตั้ง
อุทยานแห่งชาติ 7 แห่ง

เขตรักษาพันธุ์พืชและสัตว์ป่า 516 แห่ง
รวมทั้งประกาศให้พื้นที่อีก 429 แห่งเป็นเขตอนุรักษ์อยู่ภายใต้การดูแลของสถาบัน
นอกจากนี้ยังมีอุทยานธรรมชาติตามภูมิภาคต่างๆ อีกกว่า 37 แห่งซึ่งกินพื้นที่กว่าร้อยละ 7 ของประเทศ
งบประมาณจำนวน 32 พันล้านยูโรได้รับการจัดสรรเพื่ออนุรักษ์สิ่งแวดล้อม และเมื่อคิดเป็นค่าใช้จ่ายต่อประชากรจะเท่ากับ ทั้งนี้ 3 ส่วน 4 ของเงินข้างต้นจะเป็นค่าใช้จ่ายในเรื่องของการบำบัดน้ำเสียและการจัดการของเสียต่างๆ
ในระดับนานาชาติ ฝรั่งเศสเป็นภาคีของสนธิสัญญาและอนุสัญญาทางด้านสิ่งแวดล้อมหลายฉบับ รวมทั้งอนุสัญญาของสหประชาชาติว่าด้วยการเปลี่ยนแปลงสภาพภูมิอากาศ ความหลากหลายทางชีวภาพและการแปรสภาพเป็นทะเลทราย
